I've just sent off my first application to a EU institution for next year. I already have an application in for a U of T postdoc. Over the next several months, there are many more deadlines to meet, proposals to write, letters to request. If it were just me doing all the paperwork, I wouldn't mind so much, but I do feel awkward so frequently asking letters of other people on my behalf. It is, after all, fairly thankless work on their part, however often I may say thank you to them.

I know these postdocs are all competitive, and that, as a non-EU citizen, the odds of getting one are substantially lower than if I was. Nevertheless, I stand no chance if I don't apply. It's going to be a busy school year.
