In general, a lot of the stuff they did can be rather easily explained away the moment they introduced the virus. They were not _really_ vampires nor werewolves. They were beings who's abilities sort of mimic those of the mystical creatures but ultimately they're just humans with mutations. Calling them Vamps and Lycans puts them into an easier frame of reference that drops about a half hour to 45 minutes of exposition from the story.

Selene has obviously aged if she was a kid when she was taken. They might live forever, but apparently the vampires age. This was also apparent by the fact that the older a vampire looked, the more powerful it was.
