Reading this much-posted-about post and its related discussions about SF conventions reminds me that WorldCon is coming up in just a few short weeks. This will be my first one, and it's just a lazy streetcar ride away to attend. How could I not go?
Two years or so ago, back when Toronto won its WorldCon bid, it seemed like a good idea to prepay for membership, a price which would only increase as the event grew closer. It also seemed like a good idea to volunteer to assist with such a momentous event. While I successfully acquired my membership back then, volunteering never really worked out. A few people took my name and said they'd get back to me. They never did.
In retrospect, I don't have many regrets about their oversights. Sure, it would have been nice to be a part of such a major in-town event, but at the moment, I'm grateful for all the extra bits and pieces of time I have to devote to other things, like vacuuming up degraded carpet foam dust and finishing off these work hours of mine. It means that I'll have time to devote to C.'s visiting parents and to
jennybeast, who is likely passing through that week. It means I'll have that much more time to work on lecture-writing and Latin. Oh, and time to devote to a little thing called a "dissertation".

Then I remembered that I couldn't exactly impose on you guys if I want to go because of C.'s parents being there, and you're pretty stressed about how much you have to do anyway, so I'd end up in hotel on my own somewhere.
Anyway, I'm not sure yet if I could have the time off - if they make me teach then they'll probably tell me at the last minute (as usual) and I'd need to it to do the preparation stuff. :o((

The more the merrier. It's not like I was planning on getting work done during WorldCon anyways, especially with C.'s parents here! If you come around the 23rd, you'll have several days here before his parents arrive - they come on the 26th, so we can definitely host you for then.
Also, if you come - the first Monday in September, that afternoon we'll be leaving for a couple of days that C.'s parents have booked up north - then again, a week from the 23rd means you'd probably leave around the time we'd be heading north anyways. If you're coming for WorldCon, you might as well as least stay until the Monday, since the Monday is a holiday, and Sunday night is the Masquerade. C. hasn't preregistered for the convention, but he'll be doing Sunday at very least, perhaps another day or two. (I can't promise anything, but I'll keep my ears perked for any spare memberships floating around which were bought early and not being used.)

Working at conventions is a great way to get to know people, but I wouldn't recommend it to someone whose first convention is a worldcon in their own area. Trust me on that one.

I was more thinking it would be fun to be involved and that they'd need the help than anything else. Now, however, I'm just as glad I have the time for other things.
