From what I can gather, at least several of the faculty offices in my department were broken into last night by an intruder. He came into the common room too, but a fellow student was there late, grading papers, and the intruder turned right back around and left. A number of computers have gone missing from the offices. I just hope the faculty backed up regularly and aren't going to be missing anything crucial.

Isn't that freaky? *shudder*
I know at least one of them (P) didn't have backups. :(

It's disturbing. It's a good reason not to leave valuables at school. It also makes me glad that so many people spend so much time around the department's common space.

I'm mostly operating on what D. had to say at school today, which wasn't much, so I don't even if, say, ALL the faculty offices were broken into, or just some of them. Not as if it really matters whether or not I happen to know these things. But I would rather like to know if, say, my supervisor has been affected.

I've never been so relieved as when I heard D was there.
So far as I know, only some of the faculty offices were affected, your supervisor wasn't. While I was there today the police were checking it out and the locks are being changed pronto. Very, very freaky. P was unhappy, understandably. :(

I take it that this sort of thing isn't normal in Toronto? Anything that isn't chained down twice in Manchester gets stolen immediately.

This is definately not normal. It's a pretty safe city and campus. It's safe enough that we effectively have a museum of mostly inexpensive replicas of old technology in the hallway and no one has ever stolen a one of them.
