The honeysuckle's swarming with aphids. I just sprayed, but my hopes are low for it looking good, especially after its problems the last two years. My hopes are even lower for the clematis. Its aphid infestation is only just beginning, but it never really recovered from being planted, and the leading growths broken. I'm more and more convinced we'll have to replace it.

Meanwhile, the rose bush is thriving and filling out nicely, and most of the other plants are doing just fine.

Best of luck with the plants...never have much, myself, plants see me and freak out and die. Ah well. ^-^

I'm hit and miss with plants, but I am trying to learn. This is my second year in this apartment and the first time I've had a proper plant-growing environment. It's all containers, on a roof-deck, but still, what with the large barrels and built-in beds, it's a feasibly complex growing environment.

I just wish it wasn't the vine that was doing so badly - that's the only plant I feel I'm babysitting on the landlady's behalf, and doing a lousy job of it.

A few years ago some newly-planted Japanese maples in our yard were attacked by aphids galore. I couldn't spray the trees because of their 7' height, so I bought a couple of pint containers of lady bugs and let them lose on the trees. Within a few weeks, no aphids, and they never returned that summer. I also released some praying mantis, although I think it was the lady bugs that prevailed against the aphids. -- Craig Schamp

When I was young, my family had a long row of bushes which became aphid-infected. We mail-ordered ladybugs. I remember putting the refridgerated bugs out on the leaves of the plants, and watching them gradually warm up and move.

There's only one honeysuckle plant, and its had enough troubles in the past several years that it has yet to trellis very far out of reach, so ordering that many ladybugs seems excessive. I wonder how small the quantity of ladybugs one can order it? Still, if first spray, and then sudsy water won't do it, ladybugs are the next step.

Two things I've done when the aphids get hold of my roses:

1.) Mix up some dishwashing soap and water, enough to fill a bucket with suds. Apply the suds to the plants so that they're all covered, and look like they've been through a car wash. It's not all poisonous, but it tends to get rid of the aphids.

2.) If the suds alone don't work, add some hot sesame oil (Tobasco might work, too... can't say from experience) to your suds, and try again.

I'll try that, if the spray doesn't seem to have worked in another day or so. This honeysuckle seems to have enough issues without adding aphids to the mix.

I'm very glad they haven't investigated the rose bush yet.

don't ladybugs eat aphids? Can't you buy them in bulk?

Yes, and yes. But as of these past few days, no ladybugs have done me the courtesy of coming to snack on all the free aphids, and I already owned the poison spray from last year. If there are still aphids in a few more days, and it hasn't rained, I can wash off the plant and then buy ladybugs - I don't want to poison them.

I'm also wondering if I can buy few enough ladybugs to bother with it. It's only one large plant (and one tiny one) I'm trying to save.

Make the vacuum cleaners go away! They're tormenting me! You would think the stacks of a library would be a quiet place to work but no. Last week it was librarian tour groups, now it's the vacuum cleaner which is so loud I can't hear my radio over it.

The stacks in my old college used to have ghosts in them, who would knock books off the shelf at random times during the late night/ early morning study periods. It was very disconcerting, not to mention creepy.
