I planted a small rosebush today in the barrel which previously held the dried remains of the chrysanthemum. I'm hoping its thorniness will help deter the racoons from trampling it - they use that barrel as a pathway onto the rest of the deck. I've never grown roses before, and while I know something about the theory of doing so, this one came with no labels or instructions, so my grasp of theory had better be decent if this one is to survive. Its little blossoms range in hue from soft pink to a wine-like mauve.

From what I can recall, roses tend to be pretty difficult to kill. Of course, there is a difference between not killing a plant and making it flourish but, as I'm the only person I know who's ever managed to murder a spider plant, I'm happy enough if I can manager the former and ecstatic if I ever acheive the latter...

As long as the rose plant gets enough sunshine it should do just fine-- they're tough.

Yours sounds especially pretty, having differently-colored flowers on the same bush.

My rose shall have lots and lots of sunshine. Indeed, most of the day it shall have glaringly direct sunshine. I'll post a photo when more than one of the blossoms has bloomed and you can see the color varieties more easily.
