i bought that for my younger sister one year for christmas, and she read it, but said she was shocked by the level of violence/blood/guts in it. or perhaps the detail with which it was mentioned.

It had pretty shocking levels of blood and guts in it. It wasn't the detail in which it was mentioned. It was the mere existence of the sorts of twisted tortures and effects that happened. Most of them were courtesy of a reliably ickily gruesome sorceror/black magic/poisoner type, but there were other ickily disturbing moments inadvertantly (or intentionally) thanks to some of the otherwise good-guys too.

I was always relieved when the storyline returned to the two young main characters who thus far have managed to avoid being associated with the worst of the ickiness, but I don't trust the author not to embroil them somehow or other in future books.
