they're all bankrupt.

I'm beginning to think we may be back to trains and boats.

I like trains and boats. I could probably handle that, although it would make weekend trips home inconvenient. Still, if the prices on trains and boats were as cheap as some of the airfare... I would happily arrange my life around taking a boat to and from Europe, especially if I could do it for $500 (US) return.

I think a boat trip would be great fun if I had the TIME. I don't know anyone who has several weeks to sail to Europe though (like, anyone who lives in reality anyway). That, and weather would be more of a condition of travel than it is now.
There's an airline I used to fly called Northwest Airlines (shudder). Their motto (at least among passengers) was "They'll land anyway!". Seriously, they used to land in thunderstorms when all the other planes were like "no, no thanks. we'll wait." Northwest would say "wee!". It was frightening.
I stopped flying them when, before departure, a man in overalls (perhaps an airplane mechanic) came down the aisle, asked me to get up, then duct-taped the floor down under my seat. I'm not embellishing this a single iota.

Gimme a laptop and somewhere to plug it in, some kind of wireless internet access, and the ability to make a few phone call, and I'd probably be sorted for a few weeks. Ah yes, I remember why I like this job. Dunno if you could do that in the middle of the Atlantic though could probably go a couple of weeks with just the laptop and no comms...hmm...ideas...

Trains aren't the option in the UK as railtrack have been in receivership for ages now. OK, the trains still run but the train company went bankrupt.

I know, I live in the UK most of the time. I *hate* the trains.
