Jungle animals

It's been a week of young person's things labeled as representing "jungle".

According to a picture book, there are giraffes and elephants in the jungle.
According to a play session today, there are giraffes and brown bears in the jungle.
According to some new pyjamas, there are giraffes, hippopotamuses, and elephants in the jungle.

Perhaps "jungle" means "any place where large wild animals live which is not a zoo"? Whatever it means, it must include places where giraffes are found.

Misrepresentation at an early age may also explain widespread confusion later over geography and systematics.

Hmm. Have you noticed the Disney representation of Africa/India/any jungle you care to name?

I suspect "animals you are never likely to meet at home" = "jungle" for given values of all relevant vocabulary.

Don't forget that mis-placed raccoon! Although, to be honest, I didn't really know where raccoons live until I consulted t'internet.

Proof I have not properly sat down and read the book yet and had been thinking that stripy tail sticking out was fora zebra!

I grew up with racoons around. They were the niche equivalent of foxes, only more dextrous at getting into garbage.

I remember my mother hating raccoons (when we lived outside Philadelphia, PA) because they got the lids off the bins and dragged dirty nappies down the road... maybe a subconscious reason why I persisted with clothies?

I'm always snapping "savannah!" or "rain forest!" when I hear jungle misused.

We have a story book where leopard seals are friendly with penguins. It annoys me every time I see it. Food not friends!
