Reviewing films

[livejournal.com profile] abigailb, [livejournal.com profile] doseybat, and I were discussing watching movies in French, to practice French. Only they need not actually be French movies, we realized, on further reflection. While dubbing misses the cues of mouth movement, it's still useful practice. This is how I now know that I have, among other things, Shaun of the Dead, The Princess Bride, Grosse Pointe Blank, and the entire extended LOTR dubbed in French. Buying DVDs in Canada may pay off in unexpected ways.

I don't think I have any movies in Latin though. [livejournal.com profile] doseybat did ask....

Yes, it's a shame about the Latin.

It really is a great way to get your ear in which is particularly difficult with French (not that I have problems myself, having learnt French when I was 7 but I can see where the difficulties are, like not being sure where one word ends and the next one starts).

And with dubbing and subtitles you get what's very hard to get otherwise: colloquial usage. Doing this helped me get an A* in GCSE German after only one year of study, and travel round northern Spain by train after three months study by myself.

Argh, have spent too long on faceborg, feel the need for *like* button! Shaun of the Dead feels like a very appropriate place to start French comprehension practice. Even better than Thor.

I was also excited to find I have Shaolin Soccer dubbed in French! But yes - there's something so - wrong and yet right about Shaun of the Dead in French.

This doesn't work for me at all, partly because I have a bit of a hearing issue (tinnitus) and really rely on being able to read people's lips to fill in whatever blanks my ears miss. I found this out when I went to watch dubbed episodes of The Big Bang Theory in a Paris hotel room; my comprehension while watching the TV screen was depressingly bad, but nearly perfect when I went into the bathroom (where the sound was piped in) and no longer had the visual input.
