There's a reason I almost never join in with mp3 player memes. I've done this one just to demonstrate. While you're welcome to guess, there aren't more than half of these, at most, I have any real expectation of other people getting.

[P.S. Not because I think my musical tastes are obscure, but because they're somewhat internationally eclectic + I have various ongoing sampler sources which often means I haven't even heard lots of it since I don't listen to recorded music as often as I could.]

You have no idea how lucky you are, only getting first lines in so very few different languages. Also, that there were only four of these songs that I had never heard before. The question mark is for a bit of lyric I could neither decipher nor find online; I was pretty sure about enough of the rest of the opening line that I included it anyways.

From [livejournal.com profile] oursin...
1. Open up your music player. Hit shuffle.
2. Record the first few lines of the first 20 songs that come up that do not give away the name of the song. Skip instrumentals, but don't skip the embarrassing ones.
3. Make hapless LJ denizens guess the song names and artists. Google is cheating. For musical songs, the name of the musical is acceptable in place of the artist.
4. Least hapless LJ denizen wins admiration.

  1. You never gave them what they thought they'd need / you made them beg for you and you made 'em bleed

  2. Look into these eyes, hold onto these hands, believe in this heartbeat

  3. Este amor llega asi esta manera / no tiene la culpa

  4. Solita notte da lupi nel Bronx / nel locale stà suonando News Baby Stones

  5. Stacks of paper. My name in bold print. Yours beside it on this document.

  6. Corre a fari spenti la mia macchina / è un'ombra sull'asfalto

  7. I will haunt you, if you want me to / ghosts in caves circling around your room

  8. Hasta done voy / sin saber quien soy / hasta donde voy sin saber

  9. Perdona si te estoy llamando en este momento / pero me hacia falta escuchar de nuevo / aunque sea una instante tu respiracion

  10. Fed up with your indigestion. Swallow words one by one.

  11. We wish - no, must - make our disgust with this abuse perfectly clear.

  12. There's something about my baby - I'm not really sure - but it makes other people stop and look at her.

  13. The wind blew from the [back?] line cross the big November sky

  14. Mis mayores intenciones han venido hacia astrás

  15. Wand'ring through the back roads and the rain comes rushing down

  16. It's a damn tough life, full of toil and strife, we willingly undergo

  17. How can you say you're not having fun / when the road you're on is the lucky one?

  18. Six-foot-six he stood on the ground, weighed two hundred and thirty-five pounds

  19. Armies and ice and dirty green, newspaper, shovels, sand on the breeze

  20. Eleka nahmen nahmen / Ah tum ah tum eleka nahmen

Gosh, there's actually one I know on there, though I'm more likely (given the filk process) to sing the words of Falling Down on New Jersey or Falling Down on Milton Keynes to number 16, Rolling Down to Old Maui...

Absolutely right, of course. Folk songs, versatile folk songs. I have just the one version of it, the Cordelia's Dad recording of it.

I'd thought I recognised that one ... but was torn between that and something from "Annie" :-)

There was a chance of Annie! I do like musicals. (But I only have Annie on tape currently, not CD/mp3).

We have a fair number of CDs with chanties on. Like folk and filk, they're great for singing along to in the car.

The last song is from Wicked, but I never remember Wicked song names.

I'll give you credit for that. I hoped that the musical(s) would be soon to be identified, of all of these!

18. Big Bad John - Johnny Cash ?

That's the one I recognised as familiar, but in my usual non-musical way I had no idea what it was called or who had sung it ...

He was off on the song title and (which I find really funny given this is a song-guessing game) 10 whole pounds on the weight of the guy in question. But right on the artist.

Correct singer, wrong song, but a good guess.

Funny the way Cash liked that height and approximate weight, but internet lyrics tell me Big Bad John was a whole 10 pounds heavier than the guy in #18 was.

I can't ever remember song titles, but the next line's: 'But I saw that giant of a man brought to his knees by love'...

For that, I'll give you credit for getting it, since that's the song.

15 is Erasure, Am I Right?

That looks like the only overlap with my music collection, though.

Is the first one "Hallelujah," Leonard Cohen? I don't know what #4 is, but it made me laugh.

I love "Hallelujah", but it's not on this list. #1 is by another Canadian though!

#4 is part of my moderately extensive collection of Italian pop music - none of it really all that obscure, I think, but only if you lived in Italy and listened to a lot of pop music which, I suspect, none of my f'list currently do, although some may have in the past. I thought it was pretty funny too inasmuch as it more closely resembles the modern English inclusions of some of the Japanese pop music I have lying around than many Italian ones. But actually, all those NYC references are vaguely - very very very vaguely - clues to the subject matter of the song.

11 is 'Quartet' from Chess.

The Wicked track is 'No Good Deed Goes Unpunished' I think?

Correct on both counts! I was really certain that someone would get both of the lines from musicals. Thank you so much for proving me right!
