marzapane came to visit yesterday. Just yesterday, in transit, en route to Athens for reasons which have nothing to do with today's Greek headlne news. Impromptu'ly, we met at South Kensington for lunch and wandering around the V&A for a while - Renaissance sculpture, plaster cast courts, shiny jewelry, dressing up in the theatre gallery. Fresh off a plane, she then needed more sunlight, what little was left of it, so we strolled in Hyde Park, took drinks by the Serpentine, and made it home before the worst of rush hour and darkness.

We cooked dal and spicy cucumber salad and then, inspired by the cookbooks I was commentating, she made chapattis for the first time. They puffed up beautifully and entertainingly in the pan, balloons of dough barely tethered to the heat.

She left in the early hours of the morning.

Today: grey, rain, lightning sheeting up the sky like a cosmic camera flash bulb. Appointments with pirates and jam and restaurants. Grading and the newly arrived Vector in honor of DWJ.
