Transhumance cows in the Dolomites

For [livejournal.com profile] gillpolack, who has been reading up on thinking about transhumance. These cows were grazing up high in the Dolomites in Passo Giau. (Click on the photo for larger cows.)

We really lucked out with the weather on this trip. With a few largely-overnight exceptions, we had lovely, clear, warm days despite an until-then rainy summer.

Not reading up on it so much as realising it solved my cow problem. I had a community that ate cheese and yet had no space to keep cows and, given it was a real community and not my invention, I had to know why. None of the answers I was given fitted the space or localtty, so it was puzzling me. The minute I realised that transhumance is still practised in the region, evidence started hitting me in the face and then kept on doing so. I still actually don't have any for the Middle Ages, but I am going to assume that it was so, just this once.
