Fun with juggling balls

The reading for this week was so immensely long, and somewhat dense and complicated, and the movie shown in lecture is, as a general rule, a rather disturbing if informative one, that I've decided a complete change is needed to explain all the material. I'm bringing in brightly colored juggling balls to help with the explanation of how blood circulates through the body. The students will play the parts of the body. I hope it works.

Well - hopefully. I think it partially helped, but it's still such a complicated system that they'll be best off when I bring them in diagrams next week, so they can see the difference between the Galenic and Harvey systems. I think they'll likely remember that A comes before V, therefore auricles come before ventricles. They might remember that auricles/atriums are entryways/holding chambers. And they'll definitely remember that Harvey was a vitalist and vital spirits still very much plays a role in the circulation of the blood.

Still, it was a fun way to run class today, even if the topic is still confusing. I had a hunch we wouldn't actually get to discuss the reading much - which really is the purpose of the tutorial - so I gave 'em questions to take away about it. Most won't look, but it makes me feel like I did my job a bit more.
