I have three AGMs coming up in the next month here in the UK. Is it because
  1. It's the beginning of a new tax year?

  2. It's just after the end of the previous tax year?

  3. It's the end of the academic year?

Probably after the end of the previous tax year - they've got their figures for 2009-2010 calculated and have had enough time to propose a budget for next year.

My guess is two of the three are more to do with the location of Easter, and they drift back in the year when not yoked to Easter. But that's just an educated guess.

Our AGM at work was always in the first week or two of May, because of the financial year ending when it does. Can't speak for elsewhere, of course.

I'm guessing tax year, either because its the beginning of one and end of the other.
They can say how much they spent/did last year, and how much they intend to do/spend this year.

End of academic year appears to be more of a movable feast. Some universities have it as June, others as August.

It depends on the organisation really. The AGM I have to go to, for the Trust I am on, is in May because that is what it says in the Trust Deed, but mostly they fall in May because of the old tax year accounts being finalised and audited. Mind you, that also depends on when the tax year runs, some run from Jan to Dec.

Is one of those in Liverpool? I really should go to that one...

None in Liverpool that are on my radar. SHMTS is in Oxford. SFF and BSFA are in London. L&DHS was in Loughton.

BSHS is in Liverpool this year, but looking at the email again it's apparently an EGM, the accounts already having been done.

(Which reminds me - I must register for the annual conference.)

I admire, from these comments, how I live my life in acronyms.

Thank you for inspiring me to open the latest Viewpoint. It was mired in the last month's accrued things-that-could-wait.
