Many of the early cheesecake recipes don't have cheese, but that doesn't stop us calling it cheesecake. It's served for afternoon tea where I come from and that makes it a cake according to my family. Also, it seldom uses the same pastry as pie and seldom uses pastry in the same way as pie.
