*laughs* I have a mental bet with myself about which one will win, but right now, I'm amused that fruitcake is taking a beating. :)

You're sure you don't want to share what you think will win?

Poor fruitcake. It would do better if it weren't a US site hosting the voting.

You and my Mom are the great fruitcake sympathizers. :) She insists it's not as bad as I think it is, but every year when she makes them with glaceed fruits, I just cringe. They taste too fake and too heavy for me.

I'm going to keep my bet secret for the time being. ;)

They really don't have to have glacéed fruit! There are many other options. Do you remember the Bayeaux Tapestry cake photos I posted? That was a fruit cake, with not a glacéed fruit in sight.

If it's secret, then you can secretly change your bet and we'd never know, you see.

I think I need to try your Mom's fruitcake... maybe it would win me over. My grandmother made a very old-fashioned, English fruitcake when I was little, and I think it was this taste that stuck with me into adulthood.

My suspicion on the winner is that it's going to be one of the types of pie, probably a "tried and true" variety, like apple or blueberry. I know more people who won't eat certain types of cake (but they'll happily eat pie); pie is widely regarded as "anytime" type of treat, but cake is reserved for birthdays. I also find that it's harder to screw up pie, whereas I've had bad cakes more often than bad pies.
