One of the neat things about being near the zeroth meridian is that the Royal Observatory at Greenwich lights up the sky at night with a green laser beam marking the line. I was telling our visiting houseguest, historian of science [livejournal.com profile] snowdrifted, about this local feature and how easy it would be to go out and see it one evening while she's here and it's dark out.

And while that's true, that equally shows I'd temporarily forgotten that it's the solstice today, and sunset was at 9:21 pm. There's a whole lot of light in this part of the world right now, and darkness skirts around its edges. The trip to see the green laser beam may not happen, although a trip to Greenwich in daytime certainly will.

Speaking of Greenwich, the Greenwich + Docklands festival is on this weekend with lots of free events around the area.
