I started reading Brian Stock's Listening for the Text last night. It's a re-analysis of the relationship between orality and literacy in culture historically, particularly as it relates to the Middle Ages. He mentioned poetry as one of the few forms of text which modern society still often interprets primarily orally. C. suggested fairy tales are another category. Here is this morning's result of that conversation:
